The basics of project management

How can we structure the issues facing project managers?

There are a number of frameworks that can be used to help make the task facing project managers, more manageable. These are the 3-D and 7-S structures.

3-D

Many studies of world-class organisations, have shown that 'the best are better at getting better.' That is, some of the top names in manufacturing (Toyota, Dell, HP) are excellent because they have the ability to learn from what they have done. This Kaizen or continuous improvement should also apply to project processes.

The rule is simple:

Phase 1 - Design It - plan the process by which you are going to deliver the output of your project
Phase 2 - Do it - carry out the project
Phase 3 - Develop It - critically review all the activities, including all the planning, to see what could have been done better.
