Copyright

What is copyright?

Copyright is a form of protection which arises automatically whenever an original work is created. It protects many different types of original work including literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works, sound recordings, films, broadcasts or cable programmes, the typographical arrangement of published editions and computer programs. You do not have to register your work to obtain copyright protection within the UK.

How long does copyright protection last?

The length of time your copyright protection will last is partly dependent upon the type of work you are protecting but, in general, it lasts for 70 years plus the life of the author. Alternatively, it could last for 70 years from the first publication of the protected work.

How do I protect my work with copyright?

Although copyright protection requires no registration and occurs automatically once you have created your work, there are a number of steps which you would be advised to take to help make enforcement of your copyright easier.
